Dear Charlotte,
I thought about you today while I was slicing some bread. I thought about how my mom says she used to come home from school to the smell of homemade bread fresh from the oven and how she would always get the coveted heel because she got home first and you would talk to your kids about their day at school while they ate the bread you'd made for them. Like a loaf of homemade love fresh from the oven just waiting to be shared.
I wish I could have known you. I wish I could listen to you play the piano and fill a home with beautiful music. I wish I could be there when your beautiful smile lights up a room. I wish I could tell you how amazing your children turned out - my mom and JoAnn and Dave and Larry and Spencer, who I wish we could find and know he was okay and tell him we love him. I wish you could see your great grandchildren as they grow and learn and share their excitement for life. You have so many and they are so beautiful.
I feel like I could never be the kind of amazing person I know you were from all the stories I've heard. From the people you loved. From the example you left behind. When we finally get to meet, eye to eye and face to face, I want to be able to tell you that I served my family like you served yours - one loaf of fresh homemade love at a time.
Until that day...
Love, Me

Blankets for Christmas
Dear Charlotte,
My sister posted this on her blog and I thought I'd spread the love, so here ya go:
It is that time of year again when it is important that we reach out to those in need and lend a helping hand. My mother and I are continuing our tradition of providing fleece blankets to elementary children in need. As you may or may not know, my mom teaches character education to inner-city elementary kids in the Salt Lake area. Last year during one of her lessons on traditions she showed the students a picture of a little girl on Santa's lap and asked them what they thought she was asking him for. A little boy in kindergarten responded immediately by saying that she was asking for a blanket. My mom responded by asking why, and the little boy said, "Because her body shakes and wakes her up at night because she is cold." She took that not as the imagination of a child, but as a voice of experience. The children she teaches do not often have the necessities of life and we would like to help them be warm this Christmas season. Our goal this year is to provide fleece blankets for at least 125 children in need of warmth and love. Our endeavor last year was absolutely wonderful as we saw the joy on the faces of the children when they came back into their classrooms after recess to find a gift from Santa. If you are able to donate even a dollar to this cause, we would greatly appreciate your donation in helping these children stay warm and letting them know that they are loved.
Please pass the word to anyone you think may be interested. We will be delivering these blankets anonymously before the holiday break. If you would like to donate, please respond to blanketsforchristmas@gmail.com. We know that everyone is enduring hard times with the low economy but would greatly appreciate your support and efforts. More importantly, the children will appreciate your generosity and will learn a lesson of charity that will stay with them throughout their lives. Thank you for your time and support in our endeavor.
It really is a great cause for some truly needy kids, so if you could help out, that would be wicked awesome. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Update
Dear Charlotte,
In case you were wondering, my mother did get the stuff out of the basement in time for the carpet layers. I should have remembered months ago that she HAS to have a deadline to get anything done. But we didn't get the carpet in yet. The layers showed up and were like, "Are you sure you're ready for carpet? It looks like you're still in the middle of construction." I mentioned that I had hoped to get the painting done before it went in. So they laid the carpet in the room I already painted and cut all of the pieces for the rest of the basement. They'll come back sometime next week to do the rest. I'm supposed to get a call when they find out when they can come. This means I have at most, 5 days and at least 2 1/2 to get the painting done. And the mudding and taping of the new wall (where the shower used to be). And the mudding of the wall we destroyed when we pulled the corkboard down. (For those who don't know, my mother had one wall entirely covered in corkboard so she could hang things on the wall for her preschool. Of course, that didn't stop her from putting staples, tape and nails in all the other walls....)
Soooo if anyone feels like coming up and doing a little mudding, taping, painting, or babysitting this weekend, feel free. Heaven knows we could use the help.

General Conference
Dear Charlotte,
This is what it looked like at Grandma and Grandpa's during General Conference on Sunday morning:
And yet, people wonder why Grandma wants to ban laptops at Christmas...

Who knew what a fabulous weekend it would be? Ben and I came up to Park City to visit Grandma and Grandpa during General Conference. I am coming away from this weekend with much to think about and much to improve upon. I love my husband and my children deeply, but I do not always show them so. Lately I've been rather selfish in my actions and I've felt rather like my friend Mel's blog - Lost, but still wandering! I love General Conference. It gives me direction and helps me to find myself again. I love to take the time to step back and evaluate where I am in my life and where I want to be. The words of the leaders of the church always help me to do this. Oy! It is a bit overwhelming, but a good kind of overwhelming.
